Aquainting with the history:

According to ancient scripts, "Medinipur"is named under the king Medinikar, who set up the city Medinipur. He also wrote "Medinikosh", a sanskrit dictionary. The name of the zone has been cited by Pha Hien, Hiuen Tsung and Vyasdev. The ancient capital "Tamralipta" was a famous port. Medinipur was the largest district in W.B. till the year 2001. On 1st Jan,2002, greater Medinipur was divided into two parts; the eastern part was named East Medinipur;and the western part,West Medinipur. Medinipur was the center of patriosm during the Swadesi movement. The Chuar Revolt took place here.
